Culture shock.

What is culture shock?

Culture shock is the term used to describe the confusion, anxiety, or uncertainty that some travelers experience when faced with a lifestyle they are not familiar with. It can be the result of a combination of missing your home, being overwhelmed by the sensory overload of new places, sounds, and smells, and trying to navigate different customs.

The living conditions of the local inhabitants, as we primarily work in disadvantaged communities, the absolute lack of resources can have an impact. Personal space. This concept varies from place to place!

Waste management. Waste disposal is practically non-existent in many countries, and garbage is often thrown directly on the streets.

Using the restroom. There's not much to explain...

Social hierarchies. Whether based on age, gender, or social position, it's something you will see in many countries. Drawing attention. In Africa, volunteers attract a lot of attention, and people often approach them on the streets.

The concept of time. Especially in Africa, the concept of time is very flexible. If something is scheduled to start at 9 am, it will probably begin later.

Public transportation. It is often crowded, not always reliable, and sometimes...

You might think you are more than ready to embark on your first adventure. But before you board the plane, you should consider that the differences in the destination you are traveling to might give you a culture shock.

The culture in Zambia was a shock at first, as it seemed completely different from my own as a European. However, like with everything, the more time you give it, the more you discover.

How to overcome culture shock

There are many things you can do to overcome culture shock before your trip, as well as when you are already in your destination.

Before traveling

Research. Google is a great ally! Look for information about the area where you will be traveling. Research everything, from the type of food to customs, beliefs, and behavior. Everything will be useful!

In destination

Be sociable. Local people organize cultural events, outings, and other activities. They are not mandatory, but they are an excellent option to have fun, distract yourself if you start missing home, and absorb the atmosphere of a different place. Talk to your fellow travelers. Most of them will feel the same way as you. Stay open to learning. You will encounter many new things that may not always make sense to your worldview. Don't let this scare you! Take it as a learning experience. Some final tips

Remember that you are a guest in another country, bringing with you your own expectations, beliefs, and values. Although you may see things different from what you're used to, remember that it's not your place to impose your own customs. Instead, keep an open mind and take the opportunity to learn more about an unfamiliar culture. Patience is key!

Who knows, maybe you'll adapt so well that when you return home, you'll experience another culture shock.
