AFRICA

Africa is a continent that we constantly hear about in the media. However, the news we receive is far from encouraging, often associated with concepts like poverty, misery, or insecurity. But on the other hand, it's common to feel a certain curiosity about this continent, perhaps the most unknown one. Yes, Africa has always intrigued me. It's normal to feel some fear when stepping out of our comfort zone. And indeed, the African continent represents a complete departure from our bubble. But Africa is not a country; it is an entire continent. And I realize that I actually know very little about it. I only have fragments of colonial thoughts, threads of exotic imaginaries, needles of paternalism, thimbles of ignorance, and patches of curiosity. But I want to put the whole piece together, I want to explore some corners of this unknown and vast continent. Many people hesitate to take the step of preparing to embark on a project in Africa. They say they dream of going, but they keep postponing it for later, especially when the project is in a country south of the Sahara. There are so many excuses! They say there is limited infrastructure, that it's too expensive for foreigners. They claim there is little information, and what exists focuses too much on poverty, precariousness, hunger, terrorism, conflicts, wars, and horrible diseases. They talk about hustlers who hassle you. Is it true? Yes, it is. But not throughout the entire continent, not at all times. And it's not the only continent where these things happen. If you scratch beneath the surface, you'll realize that you can travel to many African countries with a high degree of safety. At least, with the level of security that these times allow us anywhere in the world. I believe that beneath these rational arguments, there are emotional ones: fear of the unknown, too much adventure. Maybe also a fear of that "attachment" that many who have been there talk about, and even a bit of laziness. Let me tell you something: a significant part of any journey to Africa has to do with overcoming fears. For my part, going to the African continent had been one of my youth dreams, but it had faded away over time. One day, it resurfaced strongly in my mind. However, I didn't know how to put my new thoughts into action, so I decided to volunteer for a community assistance experience in a place that would welcome me. Stepping out of the comfort zone, facing fears, meeting fascinating people, and overcoming obstacles on our own. Traveling is the best way to get to know oneself and the world in general.
